I live for the soft shift of seasons, the promise of warmer days and brighter skies. It's around this time of year when winter starts to melt into spring, slowly coaxing blooms from their sleepy buds and scattering daffodils across the park again. Every year, just like clockwork, I find myself returning to one motif that never fails to inspire my hand, heart and paintbrush: florals.

Yes, I know you're thinking “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” But bear with me, I think there’s something more to this seasonal romance. It’s not just about pretty petals or nature’s palette - it’s the symbolism of new growth, new beginnings, fresh energy and brighter emotions as the evenings get lighter. As Spring begins I always feel more open to connection, celebration and get stuck into a spring clean!

The Timeless Symbolism of Spring Florals

Flowers have always carried hidden meanings, from ancient myths to Victorian floriography, blossoms have been a secret language of love, hope, new beginnings, and even support.

That’s what I aim to capture in every one of our floral greeting cards, the celebration of small joys and fresh starts. Each floral artwork on our greeting cards is hand-drawn by me, created by human hands to evoke a sense of gentle wonder that art generated by AI just can't capture.

Why Florals Feel Right, Right Now

Through Autumn and Winter I'm naturally drawn to more muted tones, richer colours and heavier, warming textures and brush strokes in my art. But Spring feels different, it always opens my heart to fresher, pastel colours and brighter hues start to appear on my paint pallet. The same goes for your choice of greeting card, it’s no surprise that so many people search for vibrant spring greeting cards during this time.

Design-wise, florals give me endless room to play from lush peonies in blush pinks, to wild garden roses that feel like they’ve tumbled from a storybook, and modern botanicals with abstract, inky detail. Whether it’s for a birthday, a thank you, or simply thinking of you, flower cards for birthdays, just like a bouquet are thoughtful and uplifting.

My Favourite Spring Florals

What I love most about creating floral cards is their versatility. Floral cards aren't just for Easter or Mother's Day, there's lots of weddings and new babies being born around this time of year and there's many beautiful reasons to connect by sending a greeting card. Here's my favourite floral designs:

Hand Drawn, Sustainably Made

All of our hand-illustrated floral greeting cards are created with love in my London studio. I paint every petal by hand, inspired by real blooms gathered from a weekend trip to the Columbia Road Flower Market.

After the illustrations are complete and the paint is dry, the artwork is reproduced by a printer here in the UK on papers carefully selected to be sourced from certified sustainably managed forests. Each card is recyclable in kerbside recycling and packaged without plastic, making them ideal for eco-conscious recipients.

Florals as a Form of Connection

One of the most beautiful parts of designing greeting cards is imagining the journey each one will take. A peony-strewn card sent to a sister overseas. A bright floral thank you note tucked into a friend’s letterbox. A bright birthday card that brings colour to someone’s desk on a rainy April afternoon.

Florals speak a universal language. They say: I’m thinking of you. I see you blooming. I’m here. And in spring, when everything is opening up again, these small acts of connection matter more than ever.

In Bloom, Always

So, yes, florals for spring may not be revolutionary, but they are eternal. Flowers remind us of the time when we’re at our most open hearted and most hopeful for the coming warmer months. So at Sister Paper Co., I’ll keep designing with petals, peonies and paint, all with purpose and passion.
